George A.
Alsina, MD

Neurological Surgery

Dr. Alsina was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Wilmington, N.C. He received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Medical Degree (M.D.) from Boston University School of Medicine.

Following post-graduate training that took him from Los Angeles (UCLA) to Chicago, Dr. Alsina eagerly returned to his hometown in 2003, where he joined a local neurosurgery practice. Dr. Alsina later opened his own practice, establishing Port City Neurosurgery & Spine in 2009.

Dr. Alsina is affiliated with New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS), and the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society. He is board certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Alsina is fluent in Spanish, and his focus continues to be providing exceptional medical and personal care to the residents of New Hanover County and surrounding areas.

Adam P.
Brown, MD

Neurological Surgery

Dr. Brown was born in Toronto Canada. However, his family moved to Miami Beach when he was 12 years old. He attended University and Medical school in Boston Massachusetts, receiving his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his neurosurgery residency training at Washington University School of Medicine/Barnes Hospital and a fellowship in vascular and skull base surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute under Robert F Spetzler M.D. Dr. Brown has practiced medicine in Wilmington since 1995 and is board certified in Neurological Surgery. He has been instrumental in bringing intraoperative navigation and robotics to the area. A member of multiple national and local medical organizations, Dr. Brown continues to search for cutting-edge technologies for his patients. He provides state of the art surgical treatment of both brain and spinal disorders, including complex and minimally invasive procedures.

Thomas
Melin, MD

Neurological Surgery

Dr. Melin was born and raised in Kentucky, receiving his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. He completed his post graduate training at the University of South Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was Chief Resident in Neurosurgery. Dr. Melin settled down in Wilmington in 1991 and established Coastal Neurosurgical Associates and Spine Center in 1993.

Dr. Melin is affiliated with New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the North American Spine Society (NASS), the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS), and the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society. Jeff
Probst, PA-C

Physician Assistant

Jeff is originally from Buffalo, New York and completed his education in Erie, Pennsylvania. He obtained a Bachelor’s in Biology followed by a Masters of Physician Assistant Science as part of a direct entrance program at Gannon University. After graduating he found himself in Wilmington, North Carolina. This is where he spent over a decade first learning, then fine tuning his neurosurgical skills.

Jeff is a member of the AAPA and NCAPA. He has his pilots license, enjoys working in his yard, and knows the secret of patient care is caring for the patient.

Laura
Reefer, NP-C

Nurse Practitioner

Laura originally hails from eastern Pennsylvania, but she recently made her way to Wilmington from Alaska, where she finished up her military career working in a Family Practice clinic for four years.  She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh, then joined the Air Force, where she worked as a medical-surgical nurse for four years.  She returned to school at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Laura is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.  She has lived all over the country during her Air Force career, but Wilmington is her favorite place, and she is excited to be a part of this community.  She and her family love spending time at the beach, exploring the city, and doing anything outdoors.

Christopher
Steyskal, PA-C

Physician Assistant

Chris is originally from southern Oregon. Enlisted in the army at age 17, earning multiple awards and decorations for his multiple years of service. 1986-2005. Earned a bachelor of science in imaging technology from the Oregon Institute of Technology. And then attended the U.S. Army physician assistant’s program at Fort Sam Houston San Antonio Texas in 1995. Then transitioned from active service to the North Carolina National Guard where he then worked for Carolina Neurosurgery and spine from 1997 to 2004. During that time he also earned his masters in physician assistant studies/neurosurgery from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He relocated to Wilmington North Carolina in 2004, where he has been a member of our practice since that time.

Like most people who live in Wilmington, he enjoys the outdoors and the beach and spending time with his family.

Paul
Theiss, PA-C

Physician Assistant

Paul completed his undergraduate degree from Stony Brook University in New York, achieving a Bachelors of Science degree in Respiratory Therapy Care. He subsequently went on to receive his Masters degree of Physician Assistants at Touro College in New York. He furthered his education by completing a Critical Care Residency for Physician Assistants at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester Massachusetts. He is board certified by the NCCPA and continues to treat patients with the utmost compassion and current technology in the field of Neurosurgery.
